Gordon McKay is a Professor at the Division of Sustainable Development, College of Science & Engineering with Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar Foundation, Qatar. Prior to this, he was a Professor and Head of Department, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology.  From 1983 to 1985 he was a Professor and EU Project Manager at the Chemical Engineering department, University of Jordan, Amman; and from 1970-1983 he served as the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/ Reader in Chemical Engineering, Queen’s University, Belfast. He also has management experience with AMEC Foster-Wheeler Ireland/Project Management Ltd., abd Consult Process Engineering & Management Systems (Ireland).

His research areas include wastewater treatment – adsorption and ozonation for emerging pollutants; energy production and efficiency – WTE; and  value Added products from wastes – biochars for agriculture.

Gordon McKay has authored the 2nd most-cited paper ever in SCI Chemical Engineering category (Over 16,000 cites). His Google Scholar h-index is 116 and Scopus h-index is 100. His total number of citations in Google Scholar is more than 80,000. He was awarded DSc in 1992 for Research using Adsorption in Wastewater Treatment, and has published over 600 refereed research journal papers.
